Southey host 2 Surrey National Matches

On Sunday 26th June we hosted two National competitions, In the morning it was the Surrey Under 25 Men vs Berkshire in the White Rose Trophy , 2 Southey Members represented Surrey, Joseph Tindall and George Clarke. This was a tough match for Surrey with Berkshire proving worthy winners. It was great so many young bowlers playing at Southey.

In the afternoon it was the Surrey ladies playing against Bucks in the Walker Cup which is Top 8 bowlers in each county playing a 2 rink match. It was Surrey that started off slowly, in fact at one stage 15 shots behind but they showed their character to work their way back into the match only getting in front after 20 ends on each rink after nail biting finish Surrey managed to hang on to win by 1.

A new shirt design has been unveiled

After a few months wait the new shirts have arrived, we’ve gone for far more blue, less white and a modern design. as shown below by our youngest member George Clarke:

Surrey Men’s and Ladies Teams visit Surrey.

On Sat 14th May we had our first Middleton Cup trial with 48 male bowlers playing for their chance to play in a 2nd Trial. A week later on Sunday 22nd May saw another trial between the Men’s Balcombe and Ladies Walker Cup teams which is the Top 8 bowlers from each county. The last trial of the men and ladies Surrey team was on Sunday 29th May this time it was John’s Trophy (Ladies) vs the Middleton Cup Squad (Men) , Six rinks played on both sides, which ended in a win for a win for the Men.

Bowls Surrey Team come along for our 135th Anniversary (1 year late!!) and a Surprise for our president.

Sunday 8th May saw our 1 year delayed 135th Anniversary match against the Bowls Surrey team, this mixed included the Men’s and Ladies executive teams with many Elite County bowlers from Middleton and John’s Teams. Firstly we had the surprise for our President Ian Birnie, last year an application was sent to honour the service Ian has given to our clun in the last 25 years, for this only one award would suffice, the Surrey Leopard award, the accolade in County bowls. Nothing normally gets hidden from Ian but the secret was kept. It was only Martin Harbottle was halfway through the speech did Ian realise it was him. Now, on to the match well it went to the Surrey Team but it was a great afternoon played under a clear blue sky. We retired after for an excellent meal, raffle and an excellent speech by Ladies President Linda Pillman. Martin even stayed on to closing having throughly enjoyed himself !!

Official Opening of the Clubhouse:

We may of opened the club unoffcially the clubhouse 3 years ago but we never got to opening the club officially, for this we needed a few special guests, Our secretary managed to get hold of the Mayor of Merton Michael Brunt and the Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond. As we were due to play the Bowls Surrey team in the afternoon both Executive teams from the Men’s and Ladies Associations were in attendance headed by Men’s President Martin Harbottle and Ladies President Linda Pillman. Everyone listened to speeches then the Mayor was invited to cut the ribbon in front of the entrance. Once all that was done it was up to the Function room for drinks and a buffet. It was a fantastic start to the day .

Opening of the green for 2022:

It was Easter Monday when the green opened for this season, a good group of members had an enjoyable afternoon on the green in fine weather.

Southey finish Runner Up in Jubilee Cup :
